Spalt Without Fault
Posted by Fred In Houston on Dec 3rd 2020
I was taken with the great looks of the spalted Hickory, but uninspired by the 2x2x12 size. I don't have much use for small spindle shapes, but the way they were displayed in the NC website (6 laid side by side) inspired me to consider laminating them into a 12x12x2 square for a nicely variegated platter.
If I can make it look in actuality the same as it looks in my head, it should be striking.
I told Joe what I planned to do, and asked that he selected 6 that would play well together. He did a great job, and now I am waiting as fast as I can for dry wood. I will pre-sand one face of each stick smooth and flat for clean and tight laminated joints, and then apply dark wood glue and clamps. Should work, and if not, at least I didn't destroy a large $50 blank.

Looking forward to using this beautiful hickory in one of my folk instruments. I purchased a variety of species at the same time and I think this is my favorite. Can't wait to see what it looks like after applying a beeswax finish. I will be back soon for more.
